Tales from Consumer Advocacy Land

Real stories. Real rescues. Real advice.

Happy Thursday, friends! ❤️

If you’re flying this weekend, give yourself plenty of time to get through the airport. The partial government shutdown is causing extremely long security lines around the country. Remember, if you miss your flight because you get held up at TSA, your airline will likely put you on the next available flight as a courtesy — but that replacement may be hours or even days later. To avoid that type of fiasco, get to the airport early and pack your patience!

So what’s new this week in Consumer Advocacy Land?

Today I’m going to tell you what can happen if you book a cruise a year in advance and don’t recheck your documentation requirements before showing up at the pier. It’s also a cautionary tale about relying on AI-assisted research in 2026.

FYI, Intrepid is this week’s newsletter sponsor. They have a new trip to Peru designed specifically for solo women travelers. Have a look if you’re interested. As usual, I’m putting the ad at the bottom of the newsletter.

This Week’s Fiascos and Fixes 🔍

🚢Loyal Celebrity Cruises passenger Cherie Johnson booked a transatlantic cruise from Europe to South America a year in advance. She and her husband were greatly looking forward to celebrating her 75th birthday during that 3-week international adventure. But when the day came to set sail on Celebrity Equinox last November, they were shockingly denied boarding the ship. Now they want the cruise line to pay them over $15,000. But whose mistake was this really?

✈️Can you fly to an international destination if the name on your ticket does not match the name on your passport?

The answer to that question is “No.”

These would-be travelers found this out in a devastating way. (MCF)

🐘On their recent Alaskan adventure, a Tennessee couple spent $1,850 on an engraved fossilized mammoth tusk to commemorate the trip. But by the time United Parcel Service delivered the delicate artwork to their home, it was smashed. Even worse, UPS quickly denied all responsibility and rejected the insurance claim. Can we make this right? (MCF)

The North American Travel Journalists Association (NATJA) announced the winners of the 34th Annual NATJA Travel Media Awards Competition. Awards were made to publications, travel journalists and photographers, and destination marketing organizations.

🥈Michelle Couch-Friedman and Consumer Rescue received the Silver Award for Best Independent Travel Blog.
